Are You Bothered by Smelly Gas (Flatulence and Farting)?
Everybody Has Some Flatulence
We all have flatulence (rectal gas, farting). Michael Levitt, MD, a Minnesota gastroenterologist is one of the world's leading experts on intestinal gas. His research has shown that the average person passes gas rectally 13 to 14 times a day. So, it can be normal to pass gas up to 20 times a day!
What Causes Excess Gas and Flatulence?
Flatulence is usually related to eating carbohydrates that are not completely digested and absorbed. These substances are fermented by bacteria in the colon and gas is produced. Another cause is an aging digestive tract.
Some conditions and treatments are associated with increased flatulence and smelly gas:

- Health Food Diets
- High Fiber Diets
- Vegetarian Diets
- Crohn's Disease
- Ulcerative Colitis
