Hi,

I have been reading for a while and decided to join in and post. I haven't noticed any body with my exact problem. I have constipation, but my stool is not hard. It is soft, but I can not get it all out. I have had all tests and doc says I have IBS. He told me to increase fiber, drink fluids and exercise. I do all of these, but nothing helps. I can have a bowel movement, but it doesn't all come out, so I feel bloated and gassy. Does anybody else have this? I am so uncomfortable all the time. Also many days I have pain on left side. In case you are wondering my user name, FOS stands for Full OF Sh_ _! I think you can finish the word and know what I mean. I did not want to type it out in case I might offend someone. I am a female who is 40 something. I would appreciated any suggestions to help me with my problem. Also want to know if anybody else has this. Nice to meet you. Thank you for listening.

I have very similar symptoms. I started out as a D (for 3 years), however, and was just beginning to get that under control when I strangely switched to a C and D. My stool is soft too but I'm very constipated. It doesn't seem to make much sense. I've tried adding fiber and that helped at first for about two or three weeks and then it stopped helping. Same thing with the drugs. Now I'm taking Colace which is an over the counter drug that adds water to your stool. It has definitely helped for this bout but I've only taken it three days out of the last week. Now I am back to being constipated and will probably take it again. Hopefully I'll have the same results and the C will go away for a longer period of time.

Sorry I'm not much help but I'm new with this specific symptom too. Hopefully others can offer us some good advice.

What you described is what I often read in textbook definitions of IBS....you are not alone, I am certain. I was diagnosed three years ago and my doctor recommended Citrucel, which has been very helpful. The only thing that is bothersome to me (regardless of the Citrucel) is that when I sit down to eat a meal, within a couple minutes I have to go to the bathroom! This is embarassing when you are around people or in a restaurant. At least I know that every morning, in the middle of breakfast, I can successfully "empty out."

I hope this helps you...give the Citrucel a try or talk to your doctor. Some people are afraid to talk to others about this, but you will be surprised to know how many people suffer from IBS. (Like my doctor's daughter!!)

Have a good day,
joni

Hi fos. I'm the exact same way. I NEVER feel like I'm finished, there's always some left behind(no pun intended) It is aggravating, but typical with IBS. Don't have any advise though but thought that I'd let you know that you are by all means not alone. I couldn't tolerate the Citrucel, it got me in worse shape with the C, but that's probably cause I didn't drink enough water to help things along. Some have suggestd Flax Seed, you may want to check into this, alot of people have good results with this. Sorry that I don't have any good suggestions with the other, I myself am trying to find the solution to this also. Maybe someone will post the answer we both are looking for. lol, ronty93

Oh, and I also experience the pain in the left side, over the years it has changed in location just a bit, but it's still there. Have you tried using a heating pad for the pain, I couldn't make it without mine, a warm bath also helps. Sorry that I don't have any good suggestions with the other, I myself am trying to find the solution to this also. Maybe someone will post the answer we both are looking for. lol, ronty93

Thank you for the replys. I have tried the Citracel, but it made things worse for me. I have tried flax oil, but not flax seed. Ronty, you described me exactly, I never feel finished either, no matter how much I go, I always feel there is more, but nothing happens. I always feel bloated and tired. My appetite isn't very good either. I have read this symptom is very common with IBS, but just knowing it is common does not make it any easier to live with. I wish there was something to help.

Hi FOS:

I too have similar symptoms as you have. The pain on left side, constipation, never feeling emptied, bloating, etc.

I went to see a new gastroenterologist today and he confirmed the IBS again. Nothing that I didn't know before. I think I said everything to him that you mentioned in your message.

He mentioned the importance of dietary changes ie) getting more fibre, drinking more water, eating more veggies, smaller meals, not eating late, avoiding soda, caffeine and any foods that seem to bother you. He also mentioned the importance of exercise and relaxation. Try to not rely on laxatives too much. Which I was guilty for doing (apparently the bowels become sluggish). Metamucil is ok.

When I got home, I contacted a lady who teaches yoga. I'm willing to give this a try to see if it helps along with the dietary changes.

Anyways, just thought I'd share this with you. Wouldn't it be great if we woke up one morning and this was gone.

Hi FOS!

My symptoms are similar as well. If you really want to empty yourself try this, but be careful. Drink a cup of prune juice before going to bed. If that doesn't produce the results you are looking for, add a soft pear to the prune juice the next night. You should get more than 1 bowel movement in the morning. Start slowly with this method as it can bite you back if you over do it. It helps me a bit.

Good luck,
Dmitry

I have the feeling of not finishing very often. I think it's called incomplete evacuation. Sometimes I eat a lot of high fiber food at night which causes gas in the AM and seems to push things out, Sometimes I've eaten a lot of fruit or prunes at night which sort of gives me D in the AM which gets rid of everything for the day. Of course how much and other things (I don't know what) may still leave me with the feeling of not fully emptied. Then I take Imodium which works for me. I wish I didn't have to do this but that feeling of not fully empting and having to go during the day is soooo uncomfortable. Metamucil works with a lot of water but still that incomplete feeling can stay with me. Sometimes a tranquilizer helps for awhile. I wish someone else had a good solution to this problem.

I also have this problem. A supposatory helps sometimes, altho you don't want to use them all the time. I use them whenever I have to leave the house, which for me isn't to often.

Love your handle.

FOS,
I wanted to share a little something that I have recently learned. You see I tend to have the same syptoms as you do. I am consitpated not for more than 2 or 3 days but it is still bad when i do go it is soft like you say and then I end up coming back to the bathroom about 10-20 min later to finish it off. Well I learned this in class, the large function of your large intestine is to absorb water. If the large intestine is not working well then you will have D, if it is working too much or the waste in in the large intestine for a while and does not come out it will continue to absorb the water which causes the C. That is why C is usually brought on with a HARD stool. Now I find that I personally feel better when I drink more water. If there is more water to absorb then there is less constipation is what it seems to me. Why doesn't someone respond on this one?
well that is my idea here well why don't you tell me what you think.
thanks
christy*

Hi, everyone. I really appreciate your replys and suggestions so much, although I have already tried most everything. I can drink tons of water and it doesn't seem to make a difference. I always eat things high in fiber, fruits, vegetables, prunes, salad, bran etc.etc. I also eat very small meals. A very small breakfast consisting of 3 or 4 prunes, a breakfast bar or a bagle, orange juice and coffee. I don't eat lunch and have a small dinner. I never eat anything after 6:30 P.M. I used to take prune juice a few years ago, but I became immune to it or something, because it stopped working, although I never tried taking it at night, I used to drink it in the morning. Thank you again for your replys.

I too have this problem. The only thing that helps me is to drink plenty of water. Don't urinate until I'm real full and the pressure from the bladder on the intestines helps. It seems to push everything through. Don't mean to gross anybody out. Try it a few times and it will help. I found this out years ago when I had to have an ultrasound and had to drink lots of water. By doing that it cleaned me out. I drink lots of water anyway so it does help me.

FOS, You might try eating dried prunes at night. Start with 2 and each night add one more till it gives you D in the early AM. I sometimes have to eat 8 pieces at one time, to force D the next morning. Maybe it's just me since everyone is different. Whatever you do hang in there!

Again, I have to thank you all so much for your suggestions. I will try the prunes and the prune juice at night. If I could just empty out in the AM, my life would be so much easier. I usually go a small amount before I have to go to work. Then usually around 10:30-11:00 am when I'm at work I have the urge to go again, which is OK as long as there isn't anybody else in the ladies room. If there is somebody in there, I literally CANNOT go. I really have hang-ups about being alone when I go. Does anybody else, or can you go anywhere? Anyway if someone is in there, I leave and try holding it until the ladies room is free. Often times I hold it too long, then I lose the urge and can't go. It's so frustrating. Sometimes I feel like I'm losing my mind.
