Has anyone done jury duty? I have IBS-D type and get anxiety attacks when I feel trapped somewhere (like in a courtroom where I can't get up if I need to). Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated. I am terrified of having to do this.

Hiya,
Surely having IBS is a good enough reason not to have to do Jury service. Does it not say anything on the letter about having medical conditions that can excuse you?
I don't know where you live, but here in the UK I know quite a few people that have managed to get out of it by making up reasons like, moving house etc...
I am also a 'd' type, and there is NO WAY any court could make me go and do it!
Good luck with it...CJ

I just went to my Gastro with a letter I typed up which said I have a condition which requires the immediate use of the bathroom. He signed it and I sent it in and was excused. You can make the letter as graphic as you want, I did.
Good Health to you.

I was called for jury duty, and I too knew I just couldn't do it. I just told them that I had a nervous stomach and wouldn't be able to concentrate on the trial, and I was immediately excused. That was a relief!

Good Luck. I know exactly how you feel.

Hi! Several years ago I also was called and picked to serve. At the time I thought I wouldn't be selected and didn't ask for a letter from a DR. Well....wouldn't ya know that we were stuck for 3 whole miserable days in the deliberation room (let out at 5pm) and the restroom was right next door. Well, every time I had to go in there they heard all the faucets running at full power to cover up the noise;I was so embarrassed. I swear, the next time I will definitely get a letter from a Dr. and encourage others with IBS to do the same. Courtrooms are SO quiet;every small noise is amplified, it seems like...think of all the ibs noises your tummy will make! Just think of sitting in the jury box with all those other people so close to you and you aren't even allowed to leave for the restroom w/o everyone in the courtroom having to take a break along with you!!!!! Just the thought of it is causing my stomach to get upset....seriously. GET A LETTER. FWIW,bachiana

Two years ago I was on jury duty for two weeks. It was fascinating and I'm so glad I did it. I took immodium and had no problem, plus they have frequent break. I have decided I will NOT let this disease rule my life.

I had jury duty a few years ago and it was one the worst experiences of my life! This is what I typed in a previous post...

I was sitting down, the courtroom was dead silent, I knew I couldn't just get up and go the the bathroom, I had tons of gas.....then my stomach started to growl so loud the whole courtroom could hear!! O.K., now I'm going to die! All of the other jurers looked at me, I felt dizzy, my hand were sweating and I felt all my blood drain from my face - the worst experience of my life. Also the jurors saw how I went to the restroom every 3 minutes when we were on our breaks. I couldn't even concentrate on the trial. I will NEVER go back to jury duty - even if they throw me in jail! It probably would have been a great experience if I didn't have this problem.

Thanks for all the replies. I wish there was a way to find out how often they take breaks. I think I will try and ask my Dr. for a note and see what happens. It's too bad, a year ago I would have loved the chance to be a juror.

I must admit I was inspired by CarlenRae's post not to let ibs control her life. "OK",I said. "Here goes another try not to let this have the upper hand in MY life...after all it MUST be mind over matter after all". So.....I went ahead and bought a ticket to a function and had to leave in the middle because of the old gas problem. Silly me! You'd a thought I'd learned a lesson or 2 by now!! Thanks for wallowing in my misery and depression with me for a moment or 2. bachiana :-(
