Please can someone tell me what the long term effects of imodium are. I need to take 6-8 tabs per day and have done for about 5 years. Had limited success with Questran and on your advice am now starting some calcium! Thanks

I have never taken that many in one day, 4 is the most. You should ask your doc about that. I'm afraid that my body will get use to them tham they wont help at all..

Doctors have said that it is ok for long term use, but I don't think that many a day. You are better off trying the calcium - the one you should try is Caltrate Plus in the White and Purple box. I am going to bump up a post from LNAPE - read it - great success with it. AND MUCH SAFER.

My doctor advised me to use Immodium sparingly, when going on long trips etc.. She said that it stops diarrea but can screw up your system. (I'm paraphrasing of course) I think the more you use it, the less it helps and the more you'll need. I'd try to wean yourself off it if you can.
Try to slowly (very slowly) add more bran to your diet, I know that sounds strange, but my doctor recommended it and it helps regulate your bowel movements. But you have to start very slowly.

I also strongly recommend yogurt with live active bacteria. I'm not exactly sure what its supposed to do but it does help. I hate yogurt and only eat it because my doctor told me to.

My doctor said that Immodium is perfectly safe for long term use. I haven't known anyone thats had any problems, and it continued to work them. I've been taking it at least 3 times a week now for a year. And it still works great.

I wouldn't take so much of it though, if need be. I'd try the Caltrate Plus, one with each meal. And if you have to take no more then the 4 immodium a day. The combo should really help.

I find that if I'm going to be home I won't take it. But I always take it if I'm going out. Good Luck.

Thanks to all of you for your replies. My UK gastroentorologist told me I could take up to 12 per day. I'm hoping that I will be able to get lotronex when it reaches the UK.

My doctor said the same thing about Immodium. He said I could take 8 to 12 a day. I don't, I take it maybe once or twice a week, maximum or 4 a day. If I go over that I am C for like 2 to 3 days then the D starts all over again. I am trying relaxing techniques as well as deep breathing when I have my bad ibs-d days.
