I had my gallbladder out about 8 years ago.
Is there any evidence to show that losing your gallbladder can provoke IBS. My bowels haven't seemed the same since the surgery. My doctor suggested I might try a pill actually for cholestral that works for gallbladder problems. He said something about that instead of the gallbladder holding the bile salt that now it goes directly to the intestines, which can cause diarrhea. Anyone take this medicine? Does it work well or have any side effects. I could use the lowering of my cholestral too so maybe I would get a 2 for 1.

GottaGo,
I currently take Colestid and it DEFINITELY works!!! Was having a bad time of it about two weeks ago and really thought that maybe my body was becoming immune to it, but this week seems to be ok. You really should try it; what do you have to lose! I've been on it over a year now. I used to have "D" and barely make it to the bathroom after or during eating. But now I can eat without always having to run. Sometimes my IBS still bothers me but nothing like before. Feel well and let me know how you're doing! LA

Thx for replying. Did you have your gallbladder out? How much has it helped your cholestral? Sure sounds like it's worth looking in to. My cholestral is around 234 which to me isn't really high enough for medicine, however, on the other hand I'm scared to death of having heart problems because of it. My dad is on cholestral medicine and really has bad side effects with it, however, my aunt takes the same thing and has no problem...Guess every body's different as to how they react.

Hi GottaGo,
I had my gallbladder out 8 years ago too. I definitely think there is a connection there. I just started taking Cholestyramine powder two days ago and I can see that it's beginning to work! I only get some numbness on my lips and a vague headache as side effects. Hope you give it a try. Seems like it could help you too. Good luck.

I had my gullbladder out 2 months ago - never had this problem until after the surgery. So I am gonna have to say yes. I was perfectly normal until the surgery.

If you want a very detailed discussion on this topic, do a search using the word "gallbladder." This topic has been discussed in much detail here. It would be very worth your time to check it out.

I had my gall bladder taken out in 1976 and have suffered ever since. Taking the caltrate plus calcium in the purple box on with each meal has gotten it under control when nothing else could. You should give it a try.

I have no side effects from the Colestid. I take one tablet daily; I think it's one gram? I'll double check and let you know. Do you have problems eating out, going places, etc.? My body had become so "trained" to the fact that everytime I ate out I would have to run to the bathroom that now just the thought of going out still gets my gut in a rumble. Just went out to eat tonight and was in the bathroom twice before I left and three times at the restaurant. Thank goodness for baked potatoes! But alot of my problem stems from the "learned" response of my body before the Colestid. So I would still give the Colestid a try. I never used to be able to eat lunch at work without having to go the bathroom either halfway through lunch or immediately afterward. Now, no problem. Good luck and feel well!!! LA
