Hi...I've been having pencil thin stools and bloating, severe cramping, some constipation and some diarrhea for awhile now. Recently I had some blood on the toilet paper once with the diarrhea and once when I was constipated. I've also been having nausea that wakes me up in the middle of the night. The dr. just scheduled me for a barium enema but hasn't really explained any of this to me and I was wondering if someone here can help...I really appreciate it. Thanks!

WELCOME TO OUR HAPPY LITTLE HOME GALD YOU COULD JOIN US.!!!Your symptoms sound suspiciously like IBS. I would try adjusting your diet along with seeing the doctor. start of with a bland diet... no caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods or soda pop. Keep a diary of anything you think may trigger the D or C. Also Look at your life, has anything stressful happened that might have triggered it? Another thing that has worked real well for me is Caltrate. Try a natural remedy before going through any extreme medical procedures. and keep chacking this BB for anything else you might find helpful. There are a lot of suggestions and great people here ready to help or jus to listen. Good luck and welcome again.!

Well I have some bad news, you are not going to like the barium enema at all. You have to go on a liquid diet for 3 days then take alot of laxitives to clean you out. When you get to the exam they shove a plug up your butt and pump in liquid and then air. Then they take pictures and continue with the air for about 20 mins. You can get cramping gas pain but mostly you feel like you are going to shoot that thing out of your butt and across the room. It is not a fun test and that is why I recommend a colonoscopy instead. It is the same prep (laxitives) but they put you out for it and it is a much better test, way more accurate.
The blood is probably from a small tear or fissure, try to keep your stool soft with milk of magnesia, colace or prodeium until it heals. Triple care incontinent cleanser by Smith and Nephew will help with the soreness , calmoseptine ointment will also do the trick.
As for the nausea I have heard of ginger root tea.
I hope this helps you out.

I had my appt with the dr and he said that the barium enema showed diverticulosis and that he still wants to do a lap next Monday to rule out a few other things.
