Hi, I'm new and home from work due to IBS. I was reading everryone's messages and my symtoms seem different so I was wondering if anyone else has the same as me and if they have any remedies. Approx. every 1-2 months I swell up till I look 7 months pregnant, cannot pass anything and when I'm fully rotten inside and can't take the discomfort, everything lets go with severe diahrea, vomiting and gennerally flu like symptoms.
I've been to a specialist, had the usual. He prescribed modulon, less alcohol, be happy, exercise etc. Any advise for this at home Canadian?

We all have some different symptoms, but basically, it's the problems with going too much or not going enough! You have to keep regular. Figure out which foods bother you and which help. Make sure you are getting enough fibre and water. The problem you describe is the extreme end of being constipated. All that "stuff" builds up, doesn't move and eventually breaks down into toxic waste, basically. That's why your body eventually expels it in the form od diarrhea. Your biggest challenge, it seems, is to keep regular. Read the posting here and you'll get a lot of ideas on how to do that. I'm NOT a Dr., but I have had this forever and have done a lot of research. Hope this helps a bit, and take care.

To `Mine',
Thanks for the reply, I was starting to wonder if I had cancer. I guesss I have to clear out the `back log' and start fresh with the fiber - again.

Jangles - Hi to a fellow Canadian! Where are you at? I'm in Sask.
Your symptoms are certainly different. I don't really have any advice for you, sorry...
Has everything else been ruled out? The doctors have done all the necessary tests, etc. This is a toughie, sorry I can't offer any help.
My IBS flares up then settles down for awhile too, but I don't swell up like that.

I have the exact same problem! Boy it feels good to know that someone else is like me (although I would not wish this on anyone) I won't go for long periods of time and then it all comes out with D. I really wish I would throw up. I feel like I have to but it doesn't. I have endless test done and yet they found nothing. My Primary Doc says that if you have what she calls "rabbit pellet like" stool then you are not getting enough to drink if it is D then you need more fiber. I have to play around with it constantly but it helps. She also said that during an attack to take a Gas-x pill or something similar, it will get the "air' out and help get rid of the pain. It won't kick right in but she said give it about 20 min and you should feel better! I hope this helps you a little. I know it is tough! Hang in there!!

Hi MRW - a fellow blimp! t least that's what I feel like ,most days - just went out on bought some new `tent' types. Actually, that's an exageration, but you certainly can't tuck clothes in.
I don't think you want the `barf' part, actually there's no control over it, it comes yuk!
I've been to internists,, nobody finds anything, except the last one tells me my colon is full of diverticulae - inactive thank Heavens. I go back in Aug. for another scope - at least they fill you with Valium. He's quite gentle and caring, this specialist - as is my GP.
As a student, you are young to have this. From your profile, you are quite active, maybe that helps you. My Specialist doctor prescribed Modulon 3 time daily. I'm not a pill taker -keep forgetting. My GP prescribed Ranitidine 150mg, 1 in AM and 1in PM. That i can do & it really helps with the gas in the stomach.
Well, I'm back to work tomorrow - everybody have a good week!

I have a question...... I am mostly C, but sometimes I have D. Do you think my body is doing this bild up thing and then relesing it in diarrea? THANKS!

BL, the reason you get D after C is that not enough water or fiber will cause hard stolls. Then the food left behind has not been absorb and it cant pass because of the hard stools, therfore it finally squeeze past the hard stuff all watery. Hard to explain but your doctor should be able to explain it to you. If you keep eveything soft in there all the time with lots and lots of water and fiber, you dont get the hard stools.

Hi Jangles! I have IBS - mine is alternating d & c. I do have a friend at work that has the symptoms you described as far as the bloating - I mean her stomach gets very pregnant looking. Her Dr. diagnosed her with Diverticulitus after some testing. Good luck and stay well. Oh - I agree with the fiber....I try to take 1 or 2 tsps a day of Metamucil. Anything more than that makes it worse for me.

Jangles, I feel very sorry for you. You do seem to have major plug-up problems. I agree with silver and mine especially if they've ruled out other problems, ie. with that wonderful scoping procedure. I hope you are feeling better soon.

PS; you might want to also eliminate any white bread and cheese in your diet.
