Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. I have had this problem for about 4 years. It started after a serious tooth problem. A dentist had me on antibiotices for a year. A specialist took me through the battery of tests and told me everything looked good - I must have IBS. Goodbye, pay the bill and out the door. Mine starts as C type and then becomes more or less D type. I think nerves and certain foods are the trigger, and I find everyone's input very helpful. My last bout (over about the last week) I think was brought on by licorice. I am an active person and find this distressing. My worst experience was with friends on the golf course. I love the game, but I do believe it causes me tension or something that my body reacts to. I will be checking this website frequently for help and support. Incidentally, I have had good luck with Metamucil. Just remember to drink lots of water with it.

Yes, I agree that you have come to the right place. People here are so caring and nice. I have learned a lot about IBS but most of all, that I am not alone. My doctor must have taken lessons from yours. Was also told it is all in my head. Ya, right!!

gal4,

May I ask what kind of antibiotics your dentist had you on? My orthodontist just put me on 90 days of Periostat. Hope it don't tear up my gut. Thanks

Joe,
At first I was on Ceclor, but got hives from that. Then I can't remember what he switched me to, but it was as high-powered as Ceclor. That's when the real fun began. I do think I had symptoms earlier in my life, but not the C and D spells that started after the antibiotics. Also, at first I noticed the mucous and frantic itching. I even had hemmhoroid surgery (elastic bands). Never knew I had those things until then. Even the gastroentoligist said I didn't have them. I ran out yesterday and bought Dr. Salt's book. It is great. I am almost half way through it and want to tell a lot of people about it. Surprised about the genetic possibility - my sister was told last year that she has it and we are pretty sure my grandmother had it. Good luck with the antibiotics. The oral surgeon I went to botched things badly and I changed to another who said to get off the antibiotics because they weren't helping anyway. Four years later I have a lump still on my gum and occasional tenderness. My dentist says it is still healing. Who knows?

JeanetteC,
Thank you for your kind words. I am sorry to say my Gastroentologist was sadly lacking in her duties. I felt that I was the only person who had this problem and that it was hopeless. Thank goodness for Dr. Salt's book and this website. I learned more last night from his book than I have learned in 4 years about IBS.

rockcandi1,
Thanks for the warm welcome. I hope that I will be able to help someone else. Just knowing that there are others out there and that they are willing to share their thoughts is helpful to me.

Pattee'
Thank you for the warm welcome. I pretty much thought I was alone out there and that there wasn't a thing I could do about it.
