Hi, I have had two doctors say they think I am suffering from IBS.. All I know is I am sufffering and in the past few days it has gotten a lot worse... My Gyn told me yesterday that all this is caused from stress and Lord Knows I have enough stress in my life to kill a horse.. I am tired of waking up nauseated, in a light sweat, stomach cramps so bad they bend me double.. So how do you know for sure it is IBS and not something else?

Hi Sugar42
Well you can insist to have blood work done and then they can do some other less pleasant tests. Unfortunately there isn't a test that says yeah you have IBS. Like I've read in some books when they rule everything else out and you have the symptoms like the rest of us that's what they call it. The message board is a great way to get ideas from others and what they've tried and filled with supportive people who really understand! You must try to get your stress levels down too! Which believe me I know is hard! Keep talking!
Wish you all the best! Cher

Sugar42 - I, too have been diagnosed with IBS by a family doctor, an Internist and my OB-Gyn. I really haven't had any tests run except for an ultrasounds of my gall-bladder ( you see I fit their profile: FAIR, FOURTY (not quite!), FLATULENT, AND FLAKY!.) I will have to agree with your Ob-Gyn that stress is a HUGE contributor! But I'm also very sensitive to some foods and things like coffee, they are triggers. When my guts upset, I get upset, then my gut gets upset --it's a viscous circle. PLEASE read Dr. Salt's book (info on this page.) It will help alot - you'll see you're not alone and will understand your symptoms better. Good Luck! karen r

If you really want to know what is wrong with you, then there is one test that can pretty much rule out other diseases. It is a colonoscopy that should be done with biopsies. The biopsies are what they use to test you for these diseases. Good luck

you know what, i've had IBS for like 7 yrs and never had one single test done. i've never had blood red or black and my symptoms have been pretty much the same unless i've done something or taken something(antibiotics) to change them so i figure unless something changes or something new developes why put myself through all those aweful test so the doctor can charge me a fortune and tell me what i already know I HAVE IBS . i don't know if this helps you any it is just the way i feel about it.

I have had all the tests run. Each came back negative. Which means they didn't show anything wrong. Gall Bladder, Liver, Kidneys, etc, all showed to be working just fine. So I am out all this money now, and I still don't what IS going on inside my bowels. Other than they talk to me all the time. They want to be sure I hear them so sometimes they repeat themselves several times a day!!
