Definitely! When I'm in pain and feel like I've GOT TO GO, but can't, it's kinda part of that whole straining thing, trying to force the stuff out that just won't listen! I sure know how that can be. So, you're not alone. I think it's a normal response when you're trying to exert force on anything. Just watch you don't pass out!!

Oooohhhh Yaaa! It is exactly like having a baby. You hold your breath when you push and you pant through the cramps and gas pain. I also rock on the toilet (like I am on a rocking chair) to help pass some of the pain. Hope this helps.

I definitely can relate!!
I have had excruciating pain. But in the recent past, the pain has been sort of manageable. And I actually telll myself NOT to hold my breath and push. Let it come gradually. I think sometimes i am scared that I am going to hurt myself with one big push with one big breath. I am intherapy, and I have learned to practice even breathing - understressful situations.
But if the pain gets bad again - I am sure I will be back to my one big breath--anything to releive the pain.

The first episode I had with IBS and I had no idea that was what it was at the time... I ended up in the ER in such pain I was crying, holding my stomach and begging somebody to do something. I told the doctor the pain came and went like labor pains so naturally they took a test to see if I was having a miscarrage, which I was not... at this time they just told me I was having stomach spasms.. All I knew was that it hurt like heck...Everytime a pain would hit me I would double over and then I remembered what they had said in Lamaze (childbrith classes) on breathing and relaxing your stomach muscles.. I tried this while in the ER and it actually helped.. but sometimes a pain would sneak up on me before I could begin the breathing process. I remember letting out a huge yell and the nurse pulled back the curtain and just looked at me at which time I was half laughing and half crying because of the look on her face...I said to her.. I am sorry I can help it.. it hurts.. and she said just keep breathing and I did till the doctor finally gave me something to stop the spasms and I didn't ever think it would start working...So those of you out there who know Lamaze breathing.. you might want to try it when the pain is so bad... for those of you who don't.... Find out... I learned if I can relax and breath with the pains it makes it a lot easier..One thing I have noticed that most of you IBS folks have said is that you have C or D associated with it... A lot of times I have neither...I have had a lot of attacks and didn't have a bowel movement at all which the doctor says made it worse on me..Many times I have prayed that I would throw up or have to go to the bathroom so I could get some relief... So anyway I have found out if you can learn the correct way to make you entire body relax through the painful times it really helps.. by the way... how do you make those smiley faces??? See you all later on the BB.. Have a good day!!!

Hi Cadia,

You are not crazy... or if you ARE crazy, I'm crazy too!!! A lot of times, in fact most, I hold my breath as I "go" and when I have bad spasms I hold my breath, but I'm with Carlene. I'm trying really hard not to hold my breath and push... if I'm patient it WILL come out on its own. How gross to talk about!!

When I had my BE done, if I hadn't done some Lamaze type slow breathing i would have been screaming!!!! The tech saw what pain I was in and told me to start breathing!!!! (I think I ws holding my breath) Then it was still painful, but remotely bearable.

Jill

I definately agree with the having a baby breathing. I always start take really long deep breaths when I get really bad cramping. I also start to break out in a sweat sometimes and feel like I'm going to pass out. The horrible cramping is definately the worse.

I also use Lamaze techniques when in a lot of pain. It's interesting that so many of us do. I often think that my intestinal cramps are WORSE than labor pains ever were!

I also use Lamaze when ever I get bad gas attacks or cramps, but it comes in most handy when I feel a panic attack coming on. It works to just slow your life down for a minute too. It works well. I have been in meetings where everyone is yelling and fighting . I just start doing the breathing slowing in and out (making lots of noise doing it ) and it makes everyone else stop fighting to see what I am doing. Its funny to watch people stop in the middle of a sentence and watch me as I continue the slow in and slow out breathing. It works trust me, I live by it if you know what I mean Have a great night.

Yup, experienced all that fun too.
Some times I sit on potty with feet on lid and knees high as my head, and grunt so hard(holding my breath) that I think I will brust every blood vessel in my head.
When I have D the pain is so bad that I rock back and forth. I Think I hold my breath, like maybe it will be the last one I will get.
I do it without thinking about it.
Boy the things we don't find out about ourselves on this board. ;(

PS Or I could just be holding my breath because of the smell....
