I have been reading what all of you have been prescribed for IBS and my physician has stated that none of these work for IBS. He does say that the family that Elavil is in is closer to it, but that Elavil has so many side affects that he does not recommend these at all. I don't like the idea of mediciations and therefore am completely confused by all of this information.

I also asked him about Paxil and he said unless you are depressed you would not use these types of drugs. Can anyone help alleviate some of this medicine confusion?

Linda , that's what I mentioned in my post.
Why take those med's for IBS if your not depressed. Does not make sense to me !
Doctor's are giving the wrong Rx. for this if they are Rx'ing anti depressants for stomach pain etc.

I'm sure your doctor knows what is best for you but if you look up Elavil on a drug description web site I think that you will find that it is also used for chronic
pain (given in low doses). I have had two of my doctors tell me it works very well for that. I just started taking it so I can't tell you what it really does because it takes 3 to 6 weeks before the full effect is known. I know there are others on this bb who have taken it for a while and one concern seems to be weight gain and I get food craving myself but I want to try and wait before I judge too harsh. I agree that taking a anti- depressant for pain does not make sense but as you must know by now what works for one IBS sufferer does not always work for another. Let us know when you find something to helps you. It could help someone else too. have a great day and keep

i agree with you on not taking anti-depressants
for ibs, also if you search the FDA, they do not recognize these drugs for this type treatment, although they allow it,up to now,
my point is what else can they use for ibs?

hey glenda what is ultram, does it work,do you need a doctors perscription.
tell us more about it ,ok
thanks
charlie

Has anyone tried accupuncture? I work with a woman who said she is totally free of any pain, etc. I am going the first time in March to investigate this approache try this? Also, I like the idea of a naturepathic, but these do not practice in my state (we are a bit backwards here I must admit - sigh). Talking can help us all.

I believe humor is helping me a lot.
