Hi Guys....I've been to see 2 doctors in the last 5 years about my stomach problems. After doing a whole barrage of tests both came to the conclusion that I have IBS. My symptoms have worsened over the past 3 months and so I decided, (because I didn't like the previous doctors), that I would once and for all find a gastro doctor that I liked and could depend on in the future. I found a specialist in IBS and finally got to see him. I went in convinced that I had IBS and comfortable with the fact that I wouldn't need any further testing. Upon reviewing my medical file, he said that he couldn't assure me that what I have is IBS. My other doctors detected some inflammation and possibly a parasite, and it seems they didn't investigate these too thouroughly. Therefore, I have to do another colonoscopy and parasite testing. He said that it was probably IBS but that there could be a chance that it might be related to parasites (which would be relieving for me), or it could be an inflamatory problem (begining of Chrone's?). I'm so fucking frustrated!!!!! All this time I've finally convinced myself that what I have isn't serious and now I have to start at zero again. I'm scared that my worst fears actually might come true.....I have total confidence in this doctor and I agree I should redo the tests, but I'm just tired of this emotional roller coaster.....anybody got any advice?

Hi Laurence,

I'm really sorry to hear your so frustrated. But I think it's really important to try and focus on the "positives" surrounding your condition. First of all, I'm envious of the fact that you were able to find a Doctor that is really taking an interest in your dilema, as well as what appears to be an aggressive approach to an accurate diagnosis. Most IBS sufferers don't have Doctors that are even remotely interested in caring for them. I personnally have been made to feel like a nuisance by not only my primary care doctor, but several GI doctors as well.

Try to keep a positive attitude, by dwelling on your fears you may be adding additional pain to an already painful disease. Also, keep in tune with this site, there are many very caring and sympathetic people who can be very supportive when times get tough.

Good luck to you. Let us know how your test results come out.

Well, Laurence, I am NOT a doctor, but it could be that the parasite thing was not previously explored and an IBS diagnosis is made by process of elimination. Your doctor is just being thorough. And look at the bright side. Parasites are EASY to cure. IBS could be with you for ever!! Chrone's is not good, but it's not the end of the world. Chances are it's IBS, but your doctor would not be good if he/she didn't explore all the possibilities. Relax - you really are making it worse by getting worked up. I went through the same thing when I was first being tested so I understand how you feel. The docs would MUCH rather have something tangible to deal with than IBS so they'll look til they're through and nothing is left. Keep us posted on the results.

Just take things one day at a time, and try to stay optimistic. You'll only feel worse if you go in expecting the worst. I know that this is a rough time you're going through, but have confidence that you've finally found a good Dr., and he's trying everything he can to help you. Like he said, it's probably just IBS. Hang in there-and let us know the minute you get the test results!! K

I have had so many tests done. I also had the parasite possiblity tested. It came back negative. I was hoping that's what it was so that I could just get it cured. I've hoped that a lot of my tests had come back positive so that it was just something I needed a cure for. Unfortunatly for me it's just good old IBS. Hang in there. Hope everything turns out OK.

Your post is as if I wrote it,I'm in the exact same boat.My Dr is now looking into Crohn's as well for me I am as FRUSTRATED as you.I went to the GI doctor and his advice to me was to go off my Cipro antibiotic see how bad my pain gets and come see him in two months. In two months I'll be dead I can't eat I've lost thirty pounds in two months, then in two months we can start more tests. In the last month I've done almost all the tests there is to do.My barium x-ray came back as probuble Crohn's disease, but the GI says he won't diagnos me with that just yet.So in the mean time I sit here suffering not knowing weather it's Crohn's or a bacteria infection. I hope before we go insane somebody will be able to help us figure what we have.I will keep looking for your posts to see how you are doing.Good luck to us both!!
