Was "diagnosed" with IBS 1997 and 1998 by a gastroenterologist. Recently had an ultrasound on throat area after I questioned swelling there. The radiologist mentioned that the swollen area was the "submandibular glands", which I knew nothing about. Did some research and found they are part of the salivary gland system, which is the beginning of the digestive system. Can't help but wonder if there is a connection with why I don't seem to digest certain foods very well. Anyone have any info regarding possible connections?

I don't think there is any connection. Saliva makes it easier for food to pass down the esophagus. It also prevents tissues in the mouth from drying out and becoming infected (fights tooth decay). It plays only a minor role in digestion (e.g., salivary amylase).

I agree with flux. While saliva does play a small role in digesting starches, I don't really think it has anything to do with IBS. Of course, anything is possible! Your glands were probably swollen do to an infection of some sort.

hello
well this is to say the least most interesting topic,i have swelling in my submandibular gland, right side, the cause is stones in the duct 3 of them, in wich i can feel, that sit on the floor of your mouth, but i also have two stones in the gland also, i have had a ct scan to confirm this, my gland swells up most of the time when i eat, one ent wants to remove it, the gland,so i got a second opinion, from the ent at emory uiversity medical school, they said no big deal,a lot of people have stones in that gland and dont even know it, they told me i will know when to have it removed, but now is not the time,as long as it dont get a major infection in it, i will be ok, because it is still working,
i had ask them at emory if it had any efect on the digestive track they said NO, it only produces silva thats all, keep in mine one thing!! I HAD THIS CONDITION SINCE 1990, I HAVE IBS SINCE ABOUT 18 MONTHS AGO,C TYPE,
the swelling may be from a infection or you may have a stone or two, does it swell up only when you eat, and than go down after you eat?? if it does you got a stone blocking your production of silva, put a few drops of lemon on your duct under your toung youll know,
good luck
charlie
