I was diagnosed with IBS over a year ago. I'm 25years old. Before this bout with IBS, it only lasted for several weeks and then was gone for several weeks. This bout with constipation, gas, a constant feeling like I have to have a BM has lasted for alomost five months. The last two weeks have been better, but now the last couple days have been bad again. I take Bentyl some,(I've been on many different medications including Paxil.. made me severly ill) Is this something that will now be continuous for me??? My emotions are so tied up in this and I'm making my husband and my family miserable. I'm desperate to find answers!! I've had all the tests and have been told nothing. I've been taking St.John's wort to ease the depression, but like I said before, the last couple days have been bad again. Is this an ongoing thing I will have for the rest of my life????

Hi Jill.

I have had IBS for about one year now. The first thing I suggest is seeing a doctor. I see pain doctors at UCLA and a gastro who specializes in motility problems. I work with a psychologist to help keep a handle on my emotions and I am seeing a biofeedback techinician who is helping me to realize how tense I get and how this affects my IBS. I am doing a bit better. Over the summer I got really better, but I'm getting over a really bad 2 week bout now of constant vomit and diarrhea even though I didn't eat anything. I almost ended up in the hospital, but I was lucky because I was able to pull myself out of it. My doctors continuously assure me that if I keep on taking my meds (zoloft-an antidepressant, elavil-another anti-depressant, and mellaril-a tranquilizer) and I continue to work with my psychologist and biofeedback person, I will be able to go away to college in Sept., as I am a senior now. Good luck to you. There is help out there believe it or not, and if you are persistent and don't give up if the first doctor you see can't help you will get better. Eat a sensible diet, exerise, and work with the doctors. I hope to hear how you are doing soon!

hi jill
hang in there!!
the first thing is it looks like you are like me, you have the constipation type of ibs, if so,
most antispasmodic/anticholinergic
meds side effects are constipating
along with others bentyl included,
this is why i cant take them they only make it worse, the folkes with diarreaha dont have this problem, ask your doc if he has something that dont cause constipation,ok,
hang in there jill

The length of this curse can be so random that I wouldn't recommend being too focused on the long term.

Take each day as it comes, and if you have a bad one, then the probability is that the next will be better. If you have a good one, enjoy it!!!

Plan some, but don't fret about months down the road. You just really don't know.

If you keep a positive attitude, things will ultimately improve.

Finally, Lindsey ("Linny" above) is a great example of someone who is managing this thing with a diligence and focus that most non-IBSers couldn't match. Draw your strength from that.

Hang in...BJ

Nothing lasts forever, Jill, hang on. I believe there is an answer, we just have to keep looking and keep bugging our docs. You're going to get through this and you're going to feel GOOD again!
