Hi, I was just reading the JAMA - Journal of American Medicine at their web site. A study was just finished on alternative medicines proving that CHM - Chinese Herbal Medicine does improve IBS. Now, does anyone know exactly what CHM IS??? Thanks, Jody

I think it is a bunch of stuff. CHM is more than one supplement, as in Chinese herbal medicines. I e-mailed an oriental in Canada handling Chinese herbs and that is what he told me.

Maybe someone in Australia can find out more from Alan Bensoussan, the guy who ran the tests quoted in JAMA.

The abstract is at

On the surface, this appears to be a decent study. There had a fair sized sample and the study lasted for four months. In addition, it was double-blind and placebo controlled. The criteria for patient selection is reasonable as are those for judging improvement.

The only questions I have are how did they make the individualized if the study was double blind? The second question is how they assured the Chinese herbs were pure?

RE: chm. Yes, the study seemed quite serious but nothing mentioned just which herbs are in the concoction. It was, also, a bit ambiguous about whether the individualized doses were any better than the normal? doses.

Heads up guys and gals!

I went to see my MD about my cheesy leakage, and he recommended I go see my GI doc. I said no chance, I don't like anyone there, and they have no time to talk to me when I do go, so forget it. So, he sent me back to the surgeon that did my fissurectomy. Now this is one really great doctor. He has time to talk and is really concerned about my health and what can help me.

Anyway, while I was talking to him about all my problems, he asked me if I had ever tried a Chinese Herbalist. Wow! So, I said no, but what could he tell me about it. He said that one of his doc friends had pointed out the article in the November 11 JAMA that describes a scientific test of CHM on IBS sufferers. Cool, says I, but it's only an excerpt. NO says he, this is a real article, and lists the herbs used. Wow again! Not only that, but his son is best friends with the son of a Chinese Herbalist! Turns out that he has sent a copy of the article to this guy, and asked for a source for product!
He has agreed to notify me when hears back.
(OK, I'll stop using exclamation points, It's starting to lose it's effect )

He also had his nurse give me a copy of the article. I just got home from a ride north to help an acquaintance work on his bike, so I haven't had a chance to read it yet. The "Standard Formula" (Capsule ingredients) is detailed in a chart, but I don't think it's worth posting, as this is a standard formula, and I doubt you can get these things (20 different ingredients with wierd names like Huo Xiang, Pao Jiang, and Zhi Gan Cao) separately.

So, as soon as I find out any more, I'll let you guys and gals know.
