Has anyone ever had a laparoscopy I'm not sure of the spelling. Its where they cut holes in your stomach and shove a camera in there. My doctor is completely clueless about IBS and this is what he whats me to have. I'm nearly going crazy from frustration trying to explain that I'm almost 100% sure that nothing will show up.

I agree. Unless there is a strong indication for an organic disease, a laparoscopy is overkill.

Hi Cindi,
I had a laproscope done back in July of this year. My OBGYN Dr. recomended it after going through a ton of other tests including colonoscopy, endoscope, CT scans, Ivp, Upper and lower GI and gallbladder tests. All the tests came back with nothing untill I had a lap , and they found I had endometriosis . I have been diagnosed with IBS in the past, but now wonder if it is IBS or if the endo was growing near my bowels causing problems. They took out endo and I feel much better. I wonder what symptoms you have. I had severe nausea, and upper rightside pain under my ribs. I also get the C kind of IBS. I had many other test before having the lap, because they do put you under. It is surgery. It should not be taken lightly, but was the only thing that found what was going on inside. Please let me know what you plan on doing.
Take Care

Laparoscopy is frequently performed (maybe too much so) in the evaluation of chronic pelvic pain by OB-GYN docs. They're usually looking for endometriosis or adhesions. I'm not sure that there is a role for laparocopy in a straight-up case of IBS.

I had a laporoscopy 10 yrs ago when the doc's couldn't solve my IBS problem. Your intestines and female parts are right next/on top of each other so sometimes it's difficult to tell what pain is causing what.

I too had endometreosis and it was sitting on my intestinal wall causing all kinds of pain -- it really riled up the IBS. As a matter of fact I'm going through this again now. Back then doc put me on Danocrine to "dry up" the endo...that worked great for a couple of years and then had to take me off the meds. Same thing this time....went and had my 4th sigmoidoscopy last week after 2 months of horrendous pain in my left side and assuming it's my IBS nemisis kicking its heals up. Well today I went to my gyn and he sent me for a sonogram. Looks like my fibroids and probably endometreosis are at it again over on that left side...AGAIN. I have to talk to my doc tomorrow after he gets a full report on the sonogram to figure out a game plan on how to get me feeling better. I've been suffering way too long. we have fun or what?!

Just have to include my bizarre lap story. At five weeks pregnant I had terrible cramps and bleeding. The Doc did and ultrasound and said the baby was stuck in my tube, an ectopic pregnancy. I was crushed!!! She said I would lose the baby and my ovary and a specialist agreed with her diagnosis. I had emergency surgery that night and found out it wasn't my was a stupid cyst!!! My son is perfect and 4 and a half. Docs don't know everything!! A
