Most drugs for IBS are not available in the US. Alverine citrate is one of them. It is an antipasmodic probably most similar to Bentyl, a US medication. There hasn't been much research on its effectiveness, however.

A few of my family and friends (with IBS) in the UK take/have taken Relaxyl. It has worked for most of them short term or in the midst of an attack... The manufacturers were responsible for an IBS awareness week several years ago. My mother tells me that Boots the chemist (UK's largest pharmicist) has several shelves of IBS treatments now, but none really work that well...(she is 'C' promonent).
Interestingly they do sell Relaxyl here in Australia only here they add a laxative to it aswell - so no use to the 'D' folk like myself.

Hi Charlie,
I tried Relaxyl when I was in London 2 years ago. I saw it advertised as a med for IBS and
I couldn't believe it. So I was firmly convinced that it would help me but it didn't. It sort of slowed down the gut so when I got a D attack it lasted for hours and was very painful because usually I go to the toilet and then I feel OK. So it didn't work for me, but it is worth a try. Anyways, alverine citrate had been in the market with different names for many years (in Spain) but I had never seen it advertised for IBS.
All the best

All times are ET (US)
