In the past I have taken Lomotil and it worked very well when the D kicked in. Then I switched to imodium and it worked for a very long time. But in the past 6 months my IBS has gotten worse so I'm back on the Lomotil but the generic form which is Lonox and I really don't feel that it works as well as the brand name of Lomotil. I don't know if this is all in my head and I just wanted to know if anyone else has the same reactions. I have a follow up with my gastro next week and I was thinking I would ask her to not give me the generic but I don't want her to think "I'm crazy". Thanks for input.

Dear Lorretta, I personally have not noticed a difference but there is one easy way I have found to get drug info. Call your pharmacist!! Many times they are even more knowlegeable about certain things then the Docs and you can just ask if lomotil and lomox are exactly the same or somehow chemically different. I believe in order to be generic a drug must be exactly the same in all ways as the " real " drug. Let us know A

Thank you. I never thought to ask the pharmacist. I will call today. My daughter has epilepsy, a very mild case. She usually has a seizure about once a year. She's had it for about 3 years now and she is 17. She takes tegretol to control the seizures and it does help, but her neurologist said she has to take the real tegretol because the generic brand doesn't seem to work as well. He also said that the insurance companies know this and do not complain about giving the brand name. He said that only a few drugs are like that and I was just wondering if lomotil is one of them. But I will call the pharmisist today and find out. Thanks again and I'll let you know what he says.

loretta--i have had the same experience, a decided difference between the two.i ask my dr. to specify now-lomotil-when he raises his eyebrows i just raise mine too and say 'humor me!'...when you think about it there has to be a difference other wise why give them different names?
