Apparently there is a relatively new straig of acidaphilous calle GG 10 which is supposed to make a real difference in the flora of your gut. Just got some in from Allergy Research Group. There was a study done with some very promising results.

Can you fill us in a few of the details on what acidipholous does, as well as what the tests showed?

Hi marc & all
Hmm, this is a thread i have been interested in for some time.I have used
acidophilius,for relief.

Also ,curious to know how many IBSers previously were prescribed antibiotics for
longterm medication as I was.
By previously, I mean prior to IBS developing.
Our family has been tragically effected by
the uninformed prescr. of A/b's.

Here is a clip from a study using GG10, I found an article in Focus Magazine reporting on a 1996 study by Malin M, Suomalainen H.. Effects of oral bacteriotherapy with human Lactobacillus casei strain GG10 (10 colony-forming units twice daily for 10 days) was investigated in Crohns Disease and in juvenile chronic arthritis. During oral bacteriotherapy the gut imune response was indirectly assessed by solid-phase enzyme linked immuno-essay in 14 children with Crohns disease, in 9 with juvenile chronic arthritis and in 7 controls. The immunostimulatory effect of Lactobacillus GG was specific for crohns disease, irrespective of its activities: the mean (95% confidence interval) number of specific antibody secreting cells in the IgA class to beta-lactoglobulin increased significantly from .2 to 1.4 and to casein from .3 to 1.0. The resiults indicate that orally administered lactobacillus GG has the potential to increase the gut IgA immun eresponse and thereby to promote the gut immunological barrier. Consewquently Lactobacillus GG could provide an adjunct nutritional therapy for crohns.

So is this GG10 on the market yet? If so how do I get some? I have tried lots of different acidophilius and none seem to make any difference.

Joyce,

It is on the market. Conagra owns the strian, and several stores will carry it. I happen to have gotten mine from a distributor out of California called Allergy Research Group. They have a web page and I think you can order it through it. (Don't have the link though)

I have just found a site with a ton of info on lactobacillus GG. The site is www.live-well.com. Although I don't see the 10 mentioned anywhere on this site. What do you think of this site? Flux? Anyone?

The site seems pretty decent. The studies mentioned there are the ones that were done on Lactobacillus GG.

Marc, please keep us posted since you said you have already gotten the GG10. I, for one, would certainly like to know what kind of results are achieved with it.

Me too! I suspect my problem is a bacterial
imbalance [or mutant bact.] caused by long term b/spectrum A/B's.
